Looking for Asheville Family Hiking for a day trip or a photography session?
Here are 7 hiking spots near Asheville that the whole family can enjoy.
Trails range from easy while some may be suited for more seasoned hikers. Whether you’re looking for the perfect family photography spot or a scenic workout– these locations are sure to make you love the Asheville mountains even more.
1. Craggy Pinnacle
Craggy Pinnacle is a popular trail off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Depending on the season and time of day, this can be a crowded trail– so plan accordingly. Craggy Pinnacle Trail offers beautiful sunsets and is a popular location for many Asheville photographers. Considered a moderate hike, this location may be a challenge for young children who are not carried. However, the 32-minute out-and-back makes Craggy Pinnacle a short and sweet family hike in WNC.
2. Montreat Gate Trail
Montreat is a common destination for campers and conference-goers year-round. Previously home to Billy and Ruth Graham, this town includes many hiking and walking trails to enjoy. For an easy hike that all the youngsters can handle, we recommend taking a walk on the Gate Trail. As the name implies, the trek starts at the charming Montreat gate at the entrance to the town. Nearby paths continue on to Lake Susan, a quaint lake below Montreat College. Make sure to stop by Robert Lake Park for swing sets and other playground equipment.
3. High Falls and Hooker Falls
Looking for lots of swimming spots near Asheville? Drive to DuPont State Forest and check out High Falls and Hookers Falls. There are two nearby parking lots as well as roadside parking for busy summer days. Hiking to take a plunge ranges from easy to moderate.
4. Black Balsam Knob
Black Balsam Knob is another Asheville favorite. Bring your favorite Asheville photographer (aka: ME) to this picture-worthy view off the Art Loeb trail. Another moderate hike, little ones can often be seen making the climb, but may need to be carried at some points. You may even run into an elopement while on your trip! This trail is home to scenic views that make any Asheville photographer flock there for weddings, engagements and family photography.
5. Catawba Falls
Move East of Asheville to find Catawba Falls. This waterfall hike is considered easy, making it a perfect walk for a hot day. Check out the town of Old Fort nearby the trailhead while you’re around. Grab some cinnamon rolls at GoGo’s for the little ones– well worth it after a day outdoors.
6. Biltmore Estate
If you are traveling to Asheville, a must-see stop is the Biltmore Estate. Besides the home, there are many hiking trails to check out while visiting the grounds. Start at the Outdoor Adventure Center at Antler Hill village to grab a map and some pointers from a representative. The Biltmore Estate has many trails ranging from easy to difficult. One pro-tip for those looking for Asheville maternity photography, the Biltmore Gardens are a wonderful place for an Asheville photographer (cough, ME again ;)) to capture some beautiful photographs.
7. Frying Pan
We hope you aren’t afraid of heights! Frying Pan is an easy trail with a steady slope off the Blue Ridge Parkway. At the summit, you will find a cell phone tower that is available for the bravest of the bunch to climb. Not your thing? There are still plenty of breathtaking views below the tower. This trailhead’s parking does tend to be crowded, so prepare in advance if you’re making the trip.
Asheville is best spent outdoors. These 7 hiking trails are great options for your family to get outside and active. Family-friendly Asheville hiking can be found in any direction. Make sure to get plenty of family photos while out on your Blue Ridge adventure.
